Dear Recordists,

It is quite a while since I have written to all of you together.  This has not been that I have not had the intention to do so.  I have wanted to do this often but with many things to do the time just seems like trying to hold water in your hand, it just runs through your fingers and is gone.
This attached document means that I must take the time to write a covering email.

For a year or so now the GRN Executive Committee have been working over a new strategy for recording for GRN.  This document has now reached the final stage.  As I am responsible for the training of Recordists I must now send you the document so that you and your Directors are aware of the changes that are being made.
The National Directors and National Board of Directors in each country are responsible to see that this program is carried out.  In the end though it you, the Recordists who do the work, who are responsible to keep your Directors accountable by doing the work.
Yes, that is correct.  It is not just you being responsible to your Director to carry out a recording program.  Your Director is also responsible to you to be aware of the work that you do.

You will see as you read this document together that there is also accountability to keep the Regional Coordinator of your region informed.  It is also wise, and important, that when planning a recording program for the year ahead that you consult with the Language Tracking Office to get what information you can about the languages you are planning to record.
When you do this you will probably receive some extra information from the Language Tracking Office.  This extra information may be about other languages that are in the same region of the languages you are planning to record.
The Language Tracking Office may also give you the names of languages that they want you to check out.  That means that in the data base they have there are a list of names that COULD be languages and they need to be investigated to find out whether they actually are languages or dialects.  If they are is it necessary to plan to do recording in them.  In other words some research needs to be done about these names.
The Language Tracking Office may also send you some maps which show where the languages are spoken.  They will also show the languages - language names that they are asking to check out.

One thing I must say here is that in providing all this information you are NOT being instructed to include any of the languages or possible languages in your recording programs.  The decision as to what languages are to be recorded in your recording program is the responsibility of you and your Director.  You are the people on location and you know what should be done and what is most appropriate to be done, so the decision is yours.
This has been told to me many times over by Allan Starling, Ross, Doug and Graydon.

What will be important however is for you to write an explanation about each of the language names or possible language names and whether they are a recording need or not.  If they are a recording need it will help to give some idea when you might consider doing recording in them.  This will help the Language Tracking Office to keep their records correct and in order.

There is another important thing to notice about this recording strategy.  That is the amount of recording in each language.
This recording strategy recognizes that the state of the Church has developed and extended and that there are less numbers of languages that need basic evangelistic recordings.  It recognizes that the new, young churches need more in the way of Bible teaching material to help the young church grow and that this is best done using the peoples own language.  This is an important area where GRN can assist the local church while at the same time not forgetting to make recordings in those language groups that still need the evangelistic messages.
This means that the amount of recording for each language will most likely need to be more than just 1 or 2 cassettes.  It may mean many more recordings.  It may mean the recording of all the Bible picture books that GRN uses.  That is the Good News, the Look, Listen and Live and The Living Christ as well as the audio only Words of Life recordings. It could mean the recording of some Scripture or other material that the local church leaders feel is appropriate for the people.
So that could mean 10, 12, 16 or maybe even more recordings for any given language.  That of course means time must be allowed to do the research, the recording, the editing and the programming properly.  It also means that money is required to do all of this work.  But if we are going to fulfill this strategy then these items must be provided.
For each of you this will mean careful reporting of your time and use of the resources God provides either through other GRN centers or other supporters.

Here I just remind you also that when you are faced with a request to record material that has not been approved by the Script Committee that you must get a copy of the material and send it the Script Committee for approval.  If possible before the recording assignment takes place.  Any material that is recorded before approval is received cannot be included in material under the name of GRN until the approval has been received.

Please forgive me for this long explanation.  If I have not made anything clear or if I have left something out of this explanation please contact me and I will try to make it clear to you.

Thank you for your patience and I look forward to working with you in this new recording strategy.
